Working out your legs is often overlooked when it comes to exercising, but it is always good to workout the entire body which includes your legs so hopefully these Dumbbell Leg Workouts will be helpful to a lot of you.
Now there are likely to be 3 different type of people reading this post, people who have ‘chicken legs’ and want more muscle, people who want to develop thinner more toned looking legs and people who just want to perform maintenance and keep their legs in good shape.
Well all of you can use these dumbbell leg exercises its just the manner in which you use them, weight, number of reps, diet etc. that will determine the response from your leg muscles.
That being said I would like to recommend two different workout programs for you. If you are a woman and are looking for that slim feminine physique without building excess muscle mass then you should take a look at Visual Impact for Women, it will teach you how you can get that slim, toned and tight looking body from working out! If you are a man and you are looking to add on some muscle mass without looking too much like a meathead, (Think Hollywood Hunk as opposed to a 400 pound bodybuilder) then the Original Visual Impact course is for you. It will teach you how to get that ripped definition without building bulky muscle mass. Click here to learn more about the Visual Impact Muscle Program
Dumbbell Leg Exercises
Dumbbell Lunges
Most people already know how to perform bodyweight lunges, the only difference here is that you will be holding a dumbbell in each hand while you perform your lunges. Remember to keep your back straight during the lunge.
Exercise Modifications:
- Dumbbell Side Lunges and Reverse Lunges are when you step to the side or backwards instead of the traditional forward step, these are a good way to provide a change of pace to a monotonous workout. Try going forward, right, backwards then left for a clockwork lunge!
- The walking lunge is when you perform a lunge and instead of returning to starting position you bring your back leg forward so you are further forward than when you started, now you repeat with your other leg so that you are, slowly, walking forwards.
Dumbbell Squats
Just like with the previous exercise you are probably very much aware of bodyweight squats, the only difference here again is that you perform these squats with dumbbells in your hands.
Dumbbell Leg Curls
Not a very popular workout but one that can get great results if used correctly:
- First lie face forward on a workout bench or flat surface.
- The Dumbbell should be placed between the feet, make sure the dumbbell is firmly in place.
- Now raise your legs up so your feet are going toward your thighs.
Here is a video for further clarification:
Other Dumbbell Workouts
Because of the nature of certain workouts and the heavy reliance we have on the legs there are other workouts that are primarily used to train other body parts but that also target the legs. These can be good for you to include in your workout if you do not want to spend too much time directly on the legs:
- Dumbbell Deadlift
- Dumbbell Swingthroughs
- Dumbbell Stand Ups
Also a lot of exercises that are Standing or Bent Over will be hitting the legs as well, obviously they are not going to be doing as much as squats or lunges but if the choice comes between Seated Dumbbell Curls and Standing Dumbbell Curls then maybe do them standing if you are looking at furthering your leg workouts!
Don’t think that you’re legs play that big of a part in standing exercises? Try doing them with one leg off the ground and see how challenging it is then!
How Do You Train Your Legs?
There is a lot of debate about whether or not you should directly train your legs with weights, some people say that just using cardio will allow you to have strong legs with good definition, while others say that the leg muscles are huge so need a lot more direct training than smaller muscles like the biceps.
I am squarely on the fence with this issue; I do not overdo the amount of working out I do for my legs but at the same time I definitely do not concentrate on them as much as I do other muscle zones.
I’d really love to hear some comments on this issue, do you do a lot of direct leg training or do you just leave them to pick up residual benefits from other workouts, and if you do directly train your legs, are you a weight trainer or a cardio trainer?

I dont train my legs at all except for walking to the gym and back (15 min each way). I might start jogging there and back, or just there i might be done in on the way back!

I don’t do much with dumbbells and legs. However, when I do I will do dumbbell squats (with the dumbbells at my sides) and dumbbells deadlifts. The dumbbells deadlifts I will do once in a while just to really switch i up but I do place the dumbbells at a higher point off the ground just so I don’t overarch my back when coming down to lift the weight.
Great article.

Dave - Not Your Average Fitness Tips
I generally use HIIT for leg training. However, I like to include plyometrics as well. That’s just using my own bodyweight though. I’ve found that’s what works best for me. Squats, deadlifts, and lunges are all great lifts but I feel like I put on too much weight around my hips when I do them.

Thanks for the comments guys.
3 responses and 3 different leg training styles, it does prove that there really is no set way to train your legs, if your happy with your current muscle tone and density then just keep on trucking!

Lance,
I have been doing either bodyweight training or kettlebells the last four months or so and usually a combination of both. I have been doing one legged squats lately which are pretty killer on the legs. Kettlebells can really work your legs especially swings and get ups.

Nice kind of exercise, it can easily transform our bulging stomach into shapely curve hips.

This is much better than going to the gym and pay a fortune just to shed extra pounds. Dumbbells really helps in maintaining good posture and good health, this I only know recently from you. Thanks to post like this. I thought dumbbells are for the arms only.
