A lot of people, women especially, find it very difficult to burn that extra bit of fat that hangs stubbornly around the midsection. In an attempt to fight this bit of fat people will do an endless number of crunches constantly trying to burn that fat off.
Unfortunately this just does not work. It is impossible to spot reduce fat, meaning you cannot target a part of the body to burn fat from, fat will be burnt from all over your body when you perform exercise. For more information about this and other tips check out this post: How to Lose Belly Fat.
So what will crunches do? Performing crunches will target your Ab muscles, not your belly fat. It is still advisable to perform ab exercises if you have belly fat because if you tighten and develop your ab muscles it will give your stomach a much more defined look to it, even with the belly fat. Then once you have lost the belly fat altogether you will have a nice flat and toned stomach (or a 6 pack for the men).
Also when performing crunches it’s important to make sure you get your form correct to get the maximum benefit from your workouts. Here is a good video highlighting the correct crunches technique:
A lot of fitness folk these days advise against performing crunches and sit-ups if you have a weak lower back or if you experience any lower back pain. So if you are going to perform this exercise try to couple it with some back strengthening exercises as well to avoid any back pain.
